sustainability management

At Velomax, sustainability management is understood as a continuous improvement process in which environmental protection and sustainability play a central role.

Since 2010, committed employees from all departments have come together voluntarily and regularly as a so-called Green Team. This group coordinates and deals with all sustainability issues relating to the management of the Max-Schmeling-Halle. The Green Team is also in contact with the parent company.

Measures to reduce the consumption of resources

Energy & buildings

  • Reduction of heat demand through green, façade-insulating roof surfaces and preconditioning of outside air for temperature regulation
  • Renewed building management system for efficient control of all technical systems
  • Lighting control via timer switch
  • Complete conversion to long-life LED technology (42-75% energy savings per lighting class)

Water

  • Water savings through water-saving aerators and time limiters on taps and showers
  • Cold water supply in all visitor areas

Cleaning

  • Use of a "Clean & Green" certified cleaning process

Resources

  • Reduced paper consumption thanks to paperless management processes, central print management and digital communication (newsletter, social media, screens, LED surfaces)
Waste management & recycling

Through consistent waste management with waste separation, waste presses, separate polystyrene collection and professional disposal of propellant gas containers, we reduce waste and environmental pollution during event operations.

The dismantled cycle track was recycled in line with the circular economy: The wood finds a new use as furniture and art objects in the Velodrom, among other things.

We use the Tork PaperCircle recycling concept in the Max-Schmeling-Halle . Since 2024, 10,325 kg of paper towels have been recycled and 4,470 kg of CO₂ saved. (as of January 2026)

Since 2015, we have been collecting used cooking fat in the Max-Schmeling-Halle and Velodrom via our partner ReFood and recycling it, for example to generate energy.

Reducing resources and selecting suppliers Gastronomy
  • Use suppliers with regional, seasonal and/or organically produced food

  • Avoiding: straws, plastic cutlery and using large containers instead of small packaging

  • Use of deposit cups instead of disposable cups, avoidance of high volumes of waste and use of waste compactors to minimize the amount of waste

  • Donation of surplus food and drinks to various charitable organizations

  • Fresh preparation of vegetarian and vegan food offerings

Sustainable purchasing

Purchasing and sustainability are closely linked. For Velomax, sustainable purchasing means consciously selecting products and services that are provided in an ecologically and socially responsible manner. The aim is to reduce negative effects on the environment and society as far as possible.

Velomax takes the following criteria, among others, into account in its procurement:

  • Purchase of 100% green electricity from renewable energy sources
  • Binding sustainability and social standards in all procurement processes, including compliance with minimum wage and collective bargaining requirements, occupational health and safety, payment of social security contributions and the exclusion of bogus self-employment
  • Exclusive cooperation with suppliers listed on the Newtron supplier platform, preferably regional suppliers
  • CO₂ compensation for mail dispatch within the Group as well as for business trips and the vehicle fleet
